The Prekmurje – Styria (Štajerska) Way

Prekmursko-štajerska veja – the branch of Prekmurje and Styria (Prekmurje is the region lying between the Mura River in Slovenia and the Rába Valley, the watershed of the Rába, in the most western part of Hungary)

Inauguration:

from Galicia to Ljubljana – on 28th July 2013, St. James, Galicia

from the Hungarian border to Galicia – on 27th July 2014, St. James, Dobrovnik

In 2011, we began researching the Hungarian branch of St. James’s way, namely, the so-called Ljubljanska cesta (The Karst road) which was the most important mediaeval link from the Kingdom of Hungary via the present Slovenian territory to Italy. The Hungarian branch starts at the state border with Hungary at Kobilje and after an hour’s walk we reach Dobrovnik with the first church of St. James on this footpath. It runs on the Prekmurje flatlands, via Jeruzalemske gorice (Jerusalem Hills) to Ormož with a parish church dedicated to St. James, to the mediaeval town of Ptuj, St. Mary’s church on Ptujska Gora (the Ptuj Mountain), to Hajdina with its church of St. Martin and a mural portraying the miracle of St. James, and on towards Žiče with its mediaeval Carthusian monastery and a hospice in Špitalič, Vojnik, Galicia near Žalec and the church of St. James, past  the castle of Žovnek, which is where the Counts of Celje originate from,  via Vransko and Tuhinjska dolina (the Valley of Tuhinj) with a hospice in Špitalič and, as an attested oral lore, where Ulrich II, Count of Celje, rode, to the mediaeval Kamnik and Hraše. The Hraše church of St. James houses the portrayals of St. James as a pilgrim, praying to St. Mary on the pillar (Our Lady of the Pillar) and a bas-relief of St. James, slayer of the Moors. Both portrayals are very frequent in Spain; however, these are the only known portrayals in Slovenia. At St. James’s in Hraše a pilgrim may decide to take either the Upper Carniolan branch of the way of St. James or the central way of St. James via Ljubljana.

Like in the old days, it is recommended to receive a pilgrim’s blessing from the local parish priest; a pilgrim’s blessing for groups may be arranged with the parish priest where the pilgrimage begins.

Dear pilgrims, we hope we have stirred up a tinge of interest in where our predecessors used to tread so that you may come to a decision to embark on the same journey. Today, people are always in a hurry, unable to stop and find the way to their inner selves and those around them. Now that so many times money is scarce for special “destinations”, as people can often be heard saying, our inner peace of mind and tranquillity are within our reach: making a pilgrimage along the way of St. James in Slovenia.

Thank you!

The friends of the Way of Saint James in Slovenia wish you a pleasant pilgrimage.

Let St James, the patron saint of pilgrims and travellers, guide and protect you!
